What the literature has shown is that the effect of globalized capitalism is the aggravation of inequalities and the destruction of places, and that living a better way means taking on the tenets of sustainability and making some incredible changes in current Western lifestyles.
The example of Heidelberg is an important one: it can explain to us why sustainability would occur in a particular place, how local governments can be promoters and vessels of sustainability in ways that go beyond simple legislative measures, the outcomes of programs already in place for years and substantial measures of success. The city describes itself as the City of the Future, and is has achieved the status of a model city the world over.
