Also, Ralph Nader's paragraph-sound-bite on NPR yesterday made a lot of sense. He talked about the way the representation for votes has been gerry-mandered so much that we are trapped in a perpetual continuation of incumbents according to party. That's why it's so important to maintain other parties. (He explained it in different words, more understandable.)
